The USA’s love affair with shipping containers appears to be gathering pace with new companies springing up to satisfy demand.
Shipping containers which had been left to rust in ports all over the country are now being converted into luxury multifamily developments and retail units.
The US has more than its fair share of shipping containers arriving each day at its many ports. 21,000 of them, to be exact, and they are increasingly being recognised for their strength and suitability for modern building projects.
So instead of taking up space in the country’s ports, people are actively turning them into desirable homes and commercial spaces which can be called environmentally friendly and even ‘trendy’ depending on how much attention is paid to aesthetics.
Shipping containers are also being used as pop up marketing structures for all kinds of sporting events and concerts drawing attention from major global brands including, Google, Nike and Hyundai amongst others.
The main attraction of a shipping container is it’s a readymade structure that cuts down significantly on building costs. The cost of buying one ranges from $800 to $3,000 and many are sold by brokers or even individual sellers who combine their service with transportation and even design.
Bespoke shipping container design projects in the US can range from $10,000 to more than $2 million.
