An artist studio space made from shipping containers is currently under construction in Lisbon and it appears to be firing the imagination of Portugal creatives.
Humble shipping containers all over the world are gaining a new lease of life thanks to architects and other creative who see the possibilities this basic steel structure can offer besides ferrying goods from one place to another.
Rather than being left to rust in ports the disused metal boxes are being used for hotels, offices and even as homes.
The Village Underground Lisboa complex in Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city is set to become office space for several artists and other creative.
The architects responsible for turning the shipping containers into contemporary work spaces have even incorporated double decker buses into the design.
The new creative space is set to open in May 2015 and will consist of a total of 14 shipping containers and two double decker buses. The rooms will be rented out to users who will benefit from the venue being located in the city’s public transport history museum.
The shipping containers will be something of a blank canvas for the people working in them with little in the way of alterations. The units will be available to rent temporarily and even by the hour in some cases.
Plans for the next phase of building are already underway and include proposals for a stage for concerts and a theatre
