Shipping Containers Feature In Grand Designs

Shipping containers may be useful for transporting goods from one place to another but they can also make eye-catching homes with a little imagination as one architect in Northern Ireland was determined to prove.

The architect responsible for one of Northern Ireland’s most spectacular homes bought the containers from a supplier based at Belfast Docks and was able to design and adapt them into a contemporary home.

The project gained so much attention it was featured on the BBC’s Grand Designs. Having Kevin McCloud come to run his critical eye over a house made of shipping containers is a rarity but by all accounts the project received the thumbs up.

The shipping containers were transported down narrow country lanes to a picturesque area of farmland with stunning countryside views. The container home overlooks a stream and is fitted with the latest in modern fixtures and fittings.

The bathtub alone cost £16,500 money which was saved no doubt from the comparatively low cost of building a home from what had been a 45-foot shipping container.

The container was clad in materials designed to blend with their natural surroundings and the end result was a stunning contemporary living space.
