This project is a collaborative effort between Varco Energy, a UK-based battery storage asset owner and operator, and GE Vernova, the energy division of General Electric.\u200b<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Overview<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capacity<\/strong>: 57 megawatts (MW) power output and 138 megawatt-hours (MWh) energy storage capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> South of Liverpool, within a historically congested part of the UK electricity grid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Construction Timeline:<\/strong> Began in the third quarter of 2023, with grid connection anticipated in early 2024.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Developer:<\/strong> Varco Energy, funded by Adaptogen Capital.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology Provider:<\/strong> GE Vernova, supplying the complete BESS, including FLEXInverter, FLEXReservoir, and FlexIQ solutions. \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy Supply Potential<\/h2>\n<p>The Native River BESS has the capacity to power approximately 37,000 UK homes with clean, renewable energy. \u200b<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technical Specifications<\/h2>\n<p>GE Vernova is providing modular units comprising:\u200b<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>FLEXInverter:<\/strong> Converts stored DC energy to AC for grid compatibility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FLEXReservoir:<\/strong> Manages energy storage and discharge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FlexIQ:<\/strong> Offers intelligent control and monitoring for optimal performance.\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These components are designed to be scalable, meeting the project&#8217;s capacity requirements and providing balancing and capacity services to the National Grid. \u200b<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Construction and Infrastructure<\/h2>\n<p>Ethical Power Connections has been contracted to provide the <a href=\"https:\/\/ifsolutions.com\/what-is-balance-of-plant-in-power-plants\/\">Balance of Plant<\/a> (BoP) work and act as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk\/guide-pages\/did-you-know-you-have-a-choice#:~:text=An%20Independent%20Connections%20Provider%20(ICP,line%20with%20the%20correct%20standards.\">Independent Connections Provider<\/a> (ICP). Their responsibilities include the electrical, mechanical, and civil infrastructure necessary for connecting the BESS to the National Grid&#8217;s transmission network. \u200b<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Financial Aspects<\/h2>\n<p>Varco Energy secured \u00a358 million in debt financing from NatWest to fund the construction of the Native River project and a similar BESS project named Sizing John. The financing package includes a \u00a350 million capital expenditure facility and an \u00a38 million VAT facility. \u200b<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Significance<\/h2>\n<p>The Native River BESS plays a crucial role in supporting the UK&#8217;s transition to a net-zero future. By providing grid stability and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources, it addresses the challenges of intermittent renewable generation and contributes to a more resilient energy system.\u200b<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Richard Whitmore, director of Varco Energy, called the start of commercial operations at Native River a milestone that \u201crepresents a significant step forward in Varco\u2019s expanding portfolio of BESS assets\u201d.
