Hyundai Heavy Industries, the South Korean shipbuilder, has announced that it has started construction on an order from China for the world’s largest container ships. The contract was awarded from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and will be for the construction of five vessels, each with a capacity of 18,400 TEU (20-foot equivalent unit) container boxes.
The size breaks the previous record of the 18,000 TEU container ships another South Korean firm, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine, had built for Denmark’s APM.
