Shipping Container Beach Huts???

Southend Council has outraged locals by unveiling 8 new beach huts which look like shipping containers. The unique designs have metal roofs and clear plastic walls, which locals say look unsightly and contrast with the traditionally built wooden beach huts further down the beach.

A total of £120,000 has been spent on the new ‘shipping container’ huts and each hut is up for 7 year lease at a cost of £20,000! That is the equivalent of £240 a week!

Whilst some may think this is quite steep, the council argues that the shipping container huts are arson proof and less likely to be vandalised. They also provide a larger floor space than the traditional huts which go for roughly £16,000 in comparison.

So whilst it may be upsetting the locals, we can definitely see the benefits and are pleased at stumbling across yet another great use for the humble shipping container. We think they look great. But then again – we are slightly biased!
