Containers Art Project Launched

An art project on Watchet’s East Quay was launched at the weekend in true traditional maritime style, by smashing a champagne bottle against the shipping container side. The project is housed in a converted shipping container and displays a postcard exhibition named ‘Wish you were here’.

The art project was toasted with its very own elderflower champagne, and hosted by one of the project Directors Chris Jelley;

“This is a fabulous concept brought to fruition by the community and simple hard graft, predominantly by the artists themselves. Come and support it, see the art, visit the artists and their studios, buy from them, commission them, invest in them, see how their art develops and changes, and how this place influences the creative process. For in my mind the strong future of Contains Art is in the hands of all of us.”

The shipping containers provide the perfect working space that can be used all year round. It has been converted into a bright and airy, but well-insulated space with the help of funding from West Somerset Council and Watchet Harbour Marina, as well as Local Action for Rural Communities. The exhibition is open until July 18th.
