What is a DNV CGS Certificate

DNV CGS Certified DNV-ST-E271

DNV is a Class Guideline that provides guidance and requirements for the time-limited installation of containerised generator sets (CGSs) on board DNV-classed vessels.

DNV ensures safe and uniform interpretation of rules for using CGSs as temporary backup power, additional power (e.g., for reefer containers), or as a replacement for a damaged auxiliary or emergency generator. The guideline focuses on the individual integration of the CGS into the ship’s systems and its location on the vessel.

Common Offshore and Lifting Certificates (DNV-ST)

  • Scope: Covers the installation of containerised generator sets on DNV-classed vessels for time-limited applications, not permanent installations.
  • Applications:
    • Backup power in case of damage to a ship’s generator.
    • Additional power for extra equipment like reefer containers or seismic equipment.
  • Focus: Addresses the individual integration of the CGS within the ship’s systems and its placement on the vessel.
  • Benefit: Aims to ensure consistency and provide clarity for ship managers, suppliers, and DNV in the installation of these temporary power units.
  • Issuance: Superseded previous technical guidance from 2016 and was released by DNV, a leading classification society and technical advisor for the maritime industry.
